Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1Day

    Guwahati arrival

    Met at Guwahati airport or railway station. Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal hill, then a Brahmaputra sunset cruise if time allows. Overnight in Guwahati.

  2. 2Day

    Guwahati to Shillong

    Three hours south through the Khasi hills, stopping at Umiam Lake on the way in. Afternoon in Shillong at 1,500m: Ward's Lake, Police Bazaar and Don Bosco Museum.

  3. 3Day

    Mawphlang and Cherrapunji

    The Mawphlang sacred grove with a village guide, then on to Cherrapunji. Nohkalikai Falls, Seven Sisters Falls and the Mawsmai caves in the afternoon.

  4. 4Day

    Living root bridge

    The Nongriat double-decker root bridge: roughly 3,500 steps down from Tyrna and the same back up, taking most of the day. An easier single-decker alternative at Riwai is available for anyone who would rather not.

  5. 5Day

    Dawki and Mawlynnong

    Down to the Bangladesh border at Dawki for a boat on the Umngot, clear enough in season to see the riverbed. Mawlynnong, the cleanest village in Asia, and its bamboo skywalk on the way back to Shillong.

  6. 6Day

    Shillong to Kaziranga

    A long drive northeast, roughly 6–7 hours, into Assam and the Kaziranga grasslands. Evening at leisure at the lodge.

  7. 7Day

    Kaziranga safaris

    Elephant-back safari in the Central range at dawn where permits allow, then a jeep safari in the Western range in the afternoon for rhino, wild buffalo, swamp deer and, with luck, tiger.

  8. 8Day

    Kaziranga to Guwahati

    A second morning safari in a different range, then the drive back to Guwahati, about 5 hours. Evening free.

  9. 9Day

    Departure

    Transfer to Guwahati airport or station. Extensions to Tawang, Majuli or Ziro arranged on request, each needing several additional days.
